On April 25, 1866, one of the first known Decoration Day celebrations was held in Columbus, Mississippi. A group of women went to a cemetery to adorn the graves of Confederate soldiers who had died in a nearby fight. The women were surprised to learn that they also needed to take care of the graves of Union troops. Even though the troops were their enemies in life, they still went ahead and decorated their graves. This reconciliation and remembering helped other groups start doing the same thing.
On May 30, 1868, General Logan and a group of Union troops put flowers on the graves of Union and Confederate soldiers at the Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia. This was the first official Decoration Day. People spoke, prayed at the ceremony, and put candles and flowers on the graves.
